William Morris was a textile designer, as well as a poet, novelist, and social activist. Morris became an advocate for the British Arts and Crafts Movement which began to flourish during the 1880s.
He believed that quality design should be available to everyone and had a particular disdain for mainstream manufacturing. In 1861 he established the Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. interior design company. Here he set about creating elegant and timeless designs using handmade production techniques.
His designs are easily recognisable with their elegant flowers, leaves, and vines arranged in symmetrical patterns. Much of his inspiration was drawn from nature and the British countryside where he lived.
