Romanticism originated in Europe in the late 18th century as a broad-style movement that valued individuality, imagination and originality. It saw itself as an antagonistic reaction to the order and rationality of classic and neoclassical artistic precepts. In part fuelled by the idealism of the French and American Revolutions, Romanticism introduced principles of freedom and revolution in art and politics embracing the values of equality and justice.
Romantic artists sought to inspire an emotional response to their art by means of evoking a nostalgic yearning for the bucolic, the stirrings of life’s mysteries, and a sense of the power and grandeur of nature. Its ideals of the creative, subjective powers of the artist inspired avant-garde movements well into the 20th century.
