Of all Coolidge's dog paintings, "A Friend in Need" is his most famous. The work belongs to a series of paintings collectively referred to as “Dogs Playing Poker”, commissioned by Brown & Bigelow to advertise cigars and it depicts seven dogs sitting around a table playing poker until late hours. Its name derives from the bulldog cheating to help his friend, by handing him an ace which is placed on our sock in a hidden place.

A perfect example of kitsch art, its endless replicas have appeared in many TV shows and other popular culture art forms and adorned many basements, bathrooms, and pool rooms walls across the world.
