Despite enjoying his time with his brother Theo in Paris, Van Gogh dreamed of creating "The Studio of the South", or a space for different artists like Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, and others to exist and inspire.
In hopes of recruiting fellow impressionists, he rented and decorated 4 rooms in a yellow house on the corner of Place Lamartine in Arles, France in early 1888.Â
Unfortunately, the decorations only worked on Gaugin and that lasted for about 2 months. Turns out not even art can settle roommate troubles...
But anyways, between late 1888 and 1889, Van Gough created three separate paintings of "The Bedroom". Using warm, bright colors, and sharp angles, he wanted to convey the peacefulness of "absolute repose" or sleep (Van Gogh Museum, 2024).Â
In other words, he wanted to evoke an emocional state of peace. Whether you're an art aficionado, or just looking for some serenity, our "The Bedroom" inspired socks are the perfect way to bring some simplistic beauty into your life.
